UCSD group trained an Artificial Intelligence system on 101.6 million health record data points from over 1.3 million pediatric visits in a medical center within Guangzhou, China. Through this process the researchers discovered that the program was able to show a “high diagnostic accuracy across multiple organ systems and is comparable to experienced pediatricians in diagnosing common childhood diseases.” (Luciano, 2019). This lays the foundation for further implementation of AI in our healthcare system in order to supplement humans and significantly help with the currently overwhelmed healthcare system especially in a post Covid era.
Ophthalmology
Another team from UCSD did another test with AI but this time in the field of ophthalmology. This study was working with fewer data points however, it showed that quantity of data isn’t the only thing needed for a neural network to efficiently learn. Rather the detail and quality of data can be instrumental in getting a system to be accurate. Due to the level of depth within each data point the system could identify and refer to a specific treatment in people with sight threatening diseases within only 14,884 scans. “[The AI] optimized to recognize the discrete anatomical structures of the eye, such as the retina, cornea or optic nerve, can more quickly and efficiently identify and evaluate them when examining images of a whole eye.” (LaFee, 2018). Getting more information in our data points can help expedite the neural network processes. In the future getting more detailed data points can really help with making sure smaller data sets are still usable and still allows AI to supplement optometry in assessing and diagnosing eye diseases before they accelerate blindness. In the future this can be used more widespread and could be implemented throughout many medical centers or orthopedic practices early on to assist in identifying and diagnosing of a patient.
